Yukiko Tsushima Solo Exhibition
gFlowers and Womenh
For her first gallery exhibition in the United States, Yukiko Tsushima presents a series of works titled gFlowers and Womenh.
Yukikofs women have distinctive eyes |bathed in tears, these eyes seem to be gazing at a world far away. What is behind these enigmatic tears? As women, we cannot free ourselves from delicate feelings and emotional attachments; as women, we are sensitive and get hurt; and we need tears as a catharsis to transcend our pain, the artist says.
Yukikofs works are also filled with flowers and insects. As a little girl, Yukiko was fascinated by them. She developed a habit of observing insects and flowers, and they helped her expand her world. Every creature in the realm of nature attracted her with its unique form. As she grew up, her interest in touching flowers and insects, and her interest in talking about them, developed into an interest in drawing them.
Raised in a strict family, with both parents being math teachers, Yukiko developed an inner world of her imagination, and found herself drawn to psychic readings and supernaturalism. Struggling with human relations in the outer world, she started to draw women. In some cases, the women were reflections of her inner self, and drawing them was the act of healing herself.
After deciding on a theme, she typically starts her work by drawing a few sketches of flowers and insects. On layers and layers of elaborately painted background, she draws detailed images with pencils. Through this amazingly painstaking process, the artist comes face to face with the women she draws, and each work comes to manifest her individuality.
The exhibition will feature the five large pieces she completed this year: gCluster Amaryllis and Womanh, gBlue poppies and Womanh, gCherry blossoms and Womanh, gTulips and Womanh and gFlowering brackens and Womanh. The delicate beauty of Yukikofs works will be the perfect prelude to the approaching flower season in the City.
