Samaipata Series
On a trip to Bolivia, I traveled to Samaipata, a village in the Andes Mountains. There was a sign for three taxi tours: the site where Che Guevara was killed, a UNESCO designated Inca Heritage Site, and wine tours. Wow, was the only thing that came to mind.
In one of the shops, I found chajchas, a percussion instrument of the rattle family made with goat and sheep hooves used by indigenous people. Like the hooves sewn onto woven ribbons, I used a variety of ribbons in this series. The hooves reminded me of Georgia O’Keefe’s drawing of a necklace made of eagle claws and beans.
