Amharic Series
I am drawn to the Coptic crosses from Ethiopia with their simple geometric patterns. Christianity was originally introduced to the Kingdom of Axum, a portion of which is current day Ethiopia, in the 1st Century AD and became its state religion in 330 AD. This means that Ethiopia was Christian before the crusades or later missionaries. Ethiopia and Liberia are the two countries on the African continent not colonized by Europeans. Amharic is the language spoken in the region and is the only native written alphabet remaining in Africa.
Along with Coptic crosses, the Ethiopian silver used in this series gets its name from my interest in non-Roman alphabet written languages.
